Appearance & Grooming
- Avoid visible tattoos where possible — many onsen (hot springs), public baths, gyms and traditional workplaces in Japan still restrict visible tattoos due to historical associations, so cover up or check ‘tattoo-friendly’ listings in advance.
- Keep hair in its natural color (black/dark) and neatly cut — bright dyes and unconventional styles can work against you in interviews and conservative workplaces.
- Avoid heavy piercings or flashy accessories for interviews and formal settings.
- Keep nails trimmed and maintain simple, tidy grooming overall.
Visa & Documents
- Start your visa process early — your sponsoring employer or school usually initiates it, but you must supply documents well in advance.
- Carry your passport, Certificate of Eligibility (if applicable), and multiple photocopies of all key documents.
- Check that any prescription or over-the-counter medication you carry is allowed in Japan — regulations are strict and some common medicines are restricted.
- Register with your country’s embassy in Japan after arrival.
Money & Essentials
- Japan is still largely cash-based in smaller cities — carry sufficient yen and set up an IC card (Suica/Pasmo) for transport.
- Open a Japanese bank account as soon as your residence card is issued.
- Pack a universal power adapter and confirm your phone plan works locally.
Etiquette & Culture
- Learn basic greetings and polite phrases (aisatsu) — first impressions matter greatly.
- Remove shoes when entering homes, some restaurants, and traditional spaces.
- Maintain punctuality and discipline — being on time is a strong cultural expectation.
- Respect workplace hierarchy, use appropriate honorific language (keigo), and observe how colleagues interact before jumping in.

- Get a general health check-up and any required vaccinations before departure.
- Purchase travel/health insurance valid from your arrival date.
- Save the location of your nearest hospital, embassy, and emergency numbers on your phone.
